Our Magnet Journey

Presbyterian Hospital is on the Magnet Journey. Magnet Hospital designation is the highest and most prestigious honor an organization can receive for excellence in nursing services. The Magnet Recognition Program, administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), honors hospitals that act as a “magnet” for attracting nurses because of their professional practice work environment, clinical excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. Evidence demonstrates that Magnet hospitals have lower complication and mortality rates, high patient and employee satisfaction and provide excellent clinical care.

In Preparation…

We are focusing on planning and the implementation of key process changes necessary to support and demonstrate nursing excellence. These changes include progress in strategic nurse recruiting and nurse staffing, as well as implementation of First TouchTM, a development of a Nursing Research Program, improvement of our Clinical Career Ladder, expanded approach to supporting nurses seeking national certification and the inclusion of recognition elements like Nurse Exemplar Prize and Mini-Grants.

Nurse Involvement in Our Magnet Journey

To involve nursing staff in the journey, nursing leadership provides monthly Magnet information sessions and updates through the Nursing Shared Governance Councils. Feedback received from Employee Surveys helps us identify areas for focused improvement. The final steps include collecting evidence of qualifications and developing our written application. Throughout our Magnet journey, the true reward will be what we learn about our organization and the changes we make to improve Presbyterian nursing and the patient care processes.

Timeline

Presbyterian expects to be able to apply for Magnet Designation sometime with in the next three years.  Mean while, work continues to design and shape the department of nursing into a magnet oriented organization where nurses are recognized for their contributions, supported in their professional and academic pursuits and allowed to practice in a way that supports their professional ability.
