Faith and Helen and Thousands of Caring Employees

In 1957, Faith Delaney and Helen Evans, fresh out of nursing school in their native Quebec, Canada drove across the United States in a yellow Chevrolet convertible in search of a new home.  After a couple brief stops, they ended up taking two jobs in the operating room of Presbyterian Hospital.  More than 50 years later, Faith and Helen are still friends and still a part of the Presbyterian family.

Finding, hiring and retaining employees, like Faith and Helen, who value excellence is vital to continuing our work. Approximately 9,000 Presbyterian employees serve our patients and members today, always working in the footsteps of our founders and the many dedicated employees from past generations.

Our commitment to the Next Generation of Caring Employees

Today, healthcare systems across the nation are unfortunately facing critical nursing shortages, and our local academic nursing programs are facing a shortage of instructors, which creates long wait lists for our state's future nurses. Presbyterian has recently launched a new innovative program to help our employees earn basic or advanced nursing degrees utilizing online learning – The Presbyterian Pathways to Nursing Program.

Already, more than 100 Presbyterian employees have applied to the Pathways Program and approximately 50 have completed the selection process and have been accepted as a Pathways participant. When accepted into the program, participants receive a full scholarship to obtain a basic or advanced nursing degree from one of the academic affiliates Presbyterian has partnered with in exchange for a post-graduation work commitment.

Currently, 10 students are enrolled in the program and have started classes.  These 10 students will graduate in June 2010 and will then become licensed Registered Nurses while continuing their employment at Presbyterian.

We are committed to providing opportunities for our employees to add skills and continue their formal education so together we can meet the needs of the patients and members we serve.
